Hey there lovely! A lot of time and planning can go into a beautiful lettering piece, but it can also be very simple to craft an eye catching composition using monoline lettering.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Rhodia Dot Pad
- Strathmore Mix Media Paper
- Tombow MONO Twin Permanent Marker
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil
- Tombow MONO Plastic Eraser
PLAN YOUR IDEA
Start by sketching out some thumbnails with a Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil onto the smooth Rhodia Dot Pad. Sketching is easier to erase if you use an H grade pencil rather than a B grade pencil. Try a variety of layouts until you find one that you love and want to take to a sketch.
CREATE A SKETCH
Once you commit to a layout, sketch in a middle line both vertically and horizontally. This will serve as a guideline for the center of the page and help in placement of the words in your composition. PS, in case you were wondering, a composition is just the choices that you make about placement and style of your lettering piece.
Then, start sketching out the quote onto the Rhodia Dot Pad. Erase mistakes and add new letters until you are happy with the result, even if you write the quote wrong like I did and have to completely erase part of the composition and start fresh (we’ll see if you can spot what I fixed in the final piece).
INK UP THE FINAL PIECE
When you’re ready, it’s time to ink up the final piece of lettering. Cut a piece of mix media paper into a 5 inch by 7 inch piece (or whatever size you prefer). Set your sketch next to the final piece and carefully write your final composition copying the sketch with the Tombow MONO Twin Permanent Marker. I like to use the bold tip for the quote itself. This will create monoline lettering which is simple and not as complicated as brush lettering… perfect for beginners or someone with little lettering experience!
Add the name of the author of the quote or any doodles or details with the fine tip of the Tombow MONO Twin Permanent Marker.
When the quote is complete you’ll be ready to frame it. Be on the lookout… I’ll be sharing a fun tutorial on the Tombow Blog this week for a project that will go perfectly with this simple fall composition!
Happy Lettering!
