It’s not a secret that I am in love with all things Tombow, and I’m excited to bring you my favorite lettering products for beginners along with 10 creative ideas for how to practice.
MY 10 FAVORITE PRODUCTS FOR BEGINNERS
- Rhodia Dot Pad: This dot pad is super smooth and easy to use for lettering projects and while planning a composition.
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil (H Grade): This pencil is perfect for sketching and the light marks are easy to erase.
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil (B Grade): Practicing pressure has never been easier! The dark lead is capable of creating thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes and is perfect for practicing or creating quote compositions.
- Tombow MONO Plastic Eraser: This tiny eraser is a gentle but forceful tool for fixing all of those mistakes!

5.Tombow MONO Twin Permanent Marker: This permanent marker has two tips (broad and fine) and is great for a variety of projects, especially with monoline lettering.
6. Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip Brush Pen: My favorite small brush pen, this pen creates thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes and is super easy to control with it’s firm brush tip.
7. Tombow Fudenosuke Soft Tip Brush Pen: This brush pen is juicier than the hard tip and also creates beautiful small brush calligraphy.
8. Tombow Dual Brush Pen: This versatile brush pen is amazing for bigger lettering. The brush tip creates lovely calligraphy while the bullet tip is perfect for monoline lettering or small touchups. This pen can be blended using a variety of colors (it comes in 96!) and also can be used as watercolor.

And now the adhesives. Adhesives, you ask? Yes, adhesives are perfect for letterers to use and here is why!

9. Tombow MONO Permanent Adhesive +: This adhesive runner is amazing for creating something crafty with your lettering projects. Simply add it to the back of any project by gliding the tip and you will be able to stick it permanently into your planner or onto your project.
10. Tombow MONO Removable Adhesive: Sometimes you just need a paper to stay still on your light table or you want to stick a quote temporarily as a reminder somewhere. This removeable adhesive is just the ticket and will roll off after you are finished.
10 FUN IDEAS FOR LETTERING PRACTICE
Use whatever tool above that you desire to create lettering and have fun while you do it… just for practice!
1.Practice your drills. Write your thick downstrokes, diagonals, ovals, compound curve or any letter forms that you are struggling with. The more you practice these basic strokes and using the pen correctly, the better! Don’t know your basic strokes? I teach in person workshops… check them out at bit.ly/ShopRenmade .
2. Write the word minimum over and over to practice bounce lettering or to warm up your hand.
3. Practice with a pencil by rewriting words or phrases that you struggle with to promote consistency. Then move to the brush pen.

4. Write the same quote over and over in different ways to spark your creativity.
5. Fill a page with names from your favorite tv shows. Gilmore Girls, anyone? Watch your spacing and consistency.
6. Write a note to a friend.
7. Address envelopes on your bills or cards using a tool you need practice with. Everyone loves happy mail!

8. Fill your planner with lettering. If your letter in your calendar, it will start feeling more natural.
9. Write your grocery list in a style or with a tool that you feel uncomfortable with.
